Our Story

How it all started...

In 1953, God spoke to the heart of George Haney to begin a work in the City of Lebanon. Having been called into the Ministry and willing to be obedient to Christ, he prayed fervently and worked continually to gain support form the state convention and local churches. The West Moraine Baptist Church, led by Pastor Travis Hudson readily agreed to become the parent church to this new work in Lebanon. God opened every door and answered every prayer and several weeks later, Haney and 26 other believers met together in the first meeting of the Souther Baptist Mission, later to be known as Urbancrest Baptist Church.

As the church began to grow, and God continued to bless, the church purchased property at 645 Columbus Ave. in September 1954. The new building was completed in February 1955, and was dedicated on May 15, 1955. Rev. Tom Boring was called as Pastor on June 19, 1960 and remained Pastor of Urbancrest until his retirement in 1977.

Expanding the vision...

As the church continued to grow, the need for a larger space for worship and ministry became evident. In August of 1985, Under the leadership of Rev. Tom Harper, Brian Adams and Archie Johnson, Urbancrest broke ground on the new building at 801 Drake Rd., relocated in 1986 and moved into the new building in November 1988.

Rev. Tom Walters became the Pastor in 1989, and remained until his retirement in 1994. That year, Tom Pendergrass answered the call to the work at Urbancrest and has remained it's pastor to this date. Tom’s passion for sharing the Gospel and discipling believers is reflected in the way Urbancrest has grown from an average attendance of 100 to over 900 each week with over 1400 baptisms since 1994. In early 2003, Urbancrest relocated to it's present location at 2634 Drake road.

Where we are headed...

It is our heart and our goal to serve 10% of our community each and every week at Urbancrest. Our burden does not stop there. We are deeply committed to the work of the Lord globally, as we support 21 missionaries, 16 ministries, 8 church plants, 1 orphanage in Malawi, and send the Gospel message to over 280 U.S. prisons each month.

This is not where our story ends. Until the Lord returns, we will continue to be faithful to His work; connecting people to Jesus in Lebanon, in Cincinnati, and in the furthest regions of the earth.
